Early Life & Foundation
Dr. Kingsley R. Chin is an orthopedic spinal surgeon, professor, inventor, entrepreneur, executive leader, and humanitarian who has dedicated more than 25 years to advancing patient care, scientific research, and global spine education. His life reflects deep humility, gratitude, and resilience—values shaped by his upbringing in Buff Bay, Jamaica and strengthened through academic excellence, athletic achievement, innovation, and service-driven leadership.
Academic Journey & Athletic Excellence
Dr. Chin came to the United States on a soccer scholarship to Columbia University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College and a Bachelor of Science from Columbia Engineering through the university’s dual-degree program. As a student-athlete, he was honored as Ivy League Player of the Year, inducted into the Eta Kappa Nu electrical engineering honor society, and elected President of the Senior Class—early signs of the discipline and leadership that would guide his career.
Medical Training & Surgical Specialization
He graduated with honors from Harvard Medical School, completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program, and then completed an Adult Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Harvard. Seeking deeper expertise in spine surgery, Dr. Chin trained under world-renowned surgeon Dr. Henry Bohlman as a Spine Fellow at University Hospitals / Case Western Reserve University, one of the most respected spine programs in the world.
Academic Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Chin joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, ultimately serving as Chief of Spine Surgery. In this role, he trained residents and fellows, advanced academic initiatives, and cared for patients with complex spinal disorders using thoughtful, evidence-based approaches rooted in patient safety and preserved anatomy.
The LESS Institute: A Private Academic Spine Center
Following his academic tenure, Dr. Chin left the University of Pennsylvania to found The LESS Institute, a private academic clinic where he served as Medical Director. With offices across the United States and in Kingston, Jamaica, The LESS Institute allowed him to care for patients across diverse communities, follow long-term outcomes, and publish research that could guide surgeons facing similar cases. This work strengthened his commitment to evidence-based, anatomy-preserving spine care.
Innovation, Invention & Global Surgical Impact
As a surgeon, Dr. Chin has treated thousands of patients. Early in his career, he invented the MANTIS percutaneous spinal screw system, later acquired by Stryker Spine and now used to help tens of thousands of patients worldwide—a contribution that helped shape modern minimally invasive spine surgery.
He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters, and he holds numerous U.S. and international patents in Less Exposure Spine Surgery (LESS), biologics, interventional spine devices, and motion preservation technologies. Dr. Chin has also written an orthopedic textbook for surgeons and business and motivational books, including Prove Yourself, reflecting his belief in discipline, purpose, and personal growth.
KIC Ventures: Physician-Led Innovation
As the Founder and CEO of KIC Ventures, Dr. Chin leads a physician-driven medical technology platform dedicated to developing safer, more effective outpatient spine solutions. The company’s FDA-cleared and FDA-approved technologies—including those from AxioMed, NanoFuse Biologics, and NANISX—have been used around the world without any accusations of patient harm, supported by peer-reviewed research, clinical outcomes data, and regulatory oversight.
LESS Society & Global Education
To expand education internationally, Dr. Chin founded the LESS Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to training surgeons and interventional pain physicians in Less Exposure Spine Surgery techniques. Through this organization, he has taught clinicians across the U.S., Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean—reinforcing his belief that safe spine care should be accessible to all patients.
Commitment to Jamaica & Philanthropy
Dr. Chin remains deeply committed to philanthropy, especially in Jamaica. He frequently returns to teach, treat patients, support hospitals, mentor young people, and create opportunities in education, athletics, and professional development. His philanthropic work reflects a deep gratitude for the opportunities he received and his enduring desire to give back.
Integrity, Accountability & Resilience
Dr. Chin’s journey has also included significant challenges. He faced a nine-year federal investigation, which he approached with honesty, perseverance, and accountability. He accepted responsibility for a single false-statement plea; all remaining charges were dismissed, and the matter concluded with a civil settlement. This experience strengthened his commitment to transparency, compliance, ethical leadership, and public service, deepening his dedication to patient care, innovation, and global education.
Mission, Purpose & Legacy
Today, Dr. Chin continues his mission to advance outpatient spine surgery, develop safer technologies, mentor the next generation of clinicians and entrepreneurs, and uplift the communities that shaped him. He remains profoundly grateful for his patients, colleagues, mentors, and the global community he serves.
He hopes his legacy will be defined by service, compassion, integrity, innovation, leadership, and an unwavering belief that every patient deserves safe, effective, and dignified spine care.
