Traditional open spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) are built on the same foundation—treating the problem by accessing the spine through surrounding tissues.

MISS was developed to improve upon open surgery by using smaller incisions and specialized tools such as tubes, retractors, and endoscopes. While this reduces the size of the skin incision, it can also limit the surgeon’s view of the full anatomy, often requiring increased use of X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy).

Although MISS is less invasive on the surface, the underlying tissue disruption can still be significant. Because this occurs beneath the skin, it may be less visible—but it can still impact recovery and long-term outcomes.
